It is from Mexico. Having lived in Mexico's northernmost city San Antonio for a couple of years, I can assure you that a lot of things get eaten in Mexico that are not, in fact, food.
Then again, a lot of things get eaten at Midwestern church suppers that are not, in fact, food, so I should stfu.
