xifeng: (MY ASS IS ON FIRE)
So today's assignment was to draw a zentangle with the last three tangles I learned (Knight's Bridge, Nekton, and Fescu), plus any of the previous tangles. I had to work to make it look not like the book, because I am not at all sure of myself when I'm drawing. Hopefully it doesn't suck too hard.

I don't think I like this one very much. But hey, I at least drew and that's more than I did before.

This one was difficult for me to get the hang of. I had to erase it and start all over. Awkward, right?

I probably shouldn't judge myself so harshly for something that's supposed to be fun and enjoyable, but I feel like the bottom part is too large. This was almost meditative for me.

Okay, so getting back into this again. I think I could have dialed down the boldness on the brush tips a bit. (Have I mentioned I ultimately plan to go back and do these all in traditional media? Which I think gives me a little more control.)

I've got a fever, and the only cure is more Zentangle!

Not true, actually, but I had a few minutes to kill while I was waiting for the cabbage to boil (we always have pork and cooked cabbage on New Year's Day), so I produced this. I think it is slightly better than my first effort, but I find it easier to draw circles so who knows.

Not very long ago, I bought myself a Wacom tablet (small Intuo5, if you're keen on the gory details), with the idea of ultimately drawing scenic XFO myself. I used to draw a lot as a kid, but ultimately stopped when I got to be in about high school or so; I don't remember what the immediate catalyst was for this. Shortly after I got the tablet, I bought a copy of One Zentangle a Day (Beckah Krahula); you can read more about Zentangling here, but I bought this one in part because it's supposed to be non-representational, and consequently the onus of producing any sort of likeness is off me.

I think once I've done the entire book, I'd like to go back and do it in traditional media as well. As groovy as the Intuo5 is, I think that would give me a little more control in some regards (I've already discovered I like drawing faces better with traditional media).

This one is called Static, and looks absolutely nothing like the picture in the book. The shading is particularly crap. Ah well, I can only get better, right?
