It very much is... although it's the same fires that have been around for the past few weeks. My beloved Walhalla is at immediate risk right now, so I'm checking the fire authority's website constantly for updates :(

Maybe you said before and it just didn't register with me, but what is it that causes these fires and why do they rage unchecked for weeks? Because that seems terribly inefficient.

Well, it depends on the fire. They're all caused by the really bad drought we've been having for the past five years in a way, but individually they're either caused by heat, lightning, idiots throwing cigarette butts out car windows or bigger idiots deliberately lighting them.

It's very much not a case of inefficiency, though. Our CFA is absolutely brilliant, but we're talking about BIG fires. This map should give you a fairly good idea of the current situation. That's a LOT of fire, and when you add in wind conditions and so forth, it's pretty amazing it's not bigger.

Oh, okay. That actually cleared things up for me a bit. (As you might have guessed, Indiana is wetter than Australia--which is not to say that we don't or couldn't possibly have fires, just that they're usually forest fires and fairly easily controlled.)

Yeah, in some parts of the country it's like that here, too, but in the fire prone states it's a real worry - especially when you add a drought into the mix :(

Heh, I know that with shipping, your present isn't going to get there until nearly January. Maybe it'll be a New Year's Eve present? And your card probably won't get there in time for January 7, because the mail service is slowed down so at this time of year. It's okay. I don't open presents until January 1 as part of my atheist mom's tradition.

That's okay. I'm not horribly upset; much like you, I didn't expect to get anything. Also, I did send you a present for your birthday (well, it was your last birthday, but maybe you can make it stretch for both). However, it's clearly not going to get there on anything like time.
