A life miscellany:

+ We went to the Tin Fish on Friday night. Om nom nom. :9
+ Lolmom made shepherd's pie on Sunday, and I made a shrimp Cobb salad on Monday night. Also om nom nom. :9
+ I think I've Arrived, financially speaking, because I got the doctor's bill for the bloodwork she ordered when I had my physical, and I just sat down and paid it without a moment's thought. No panic, no mental moaning, no "oh, fuck, I'm gonna have to wait this until my next paycheck". (Of course, it helps that it was only like $15.) I still owe money, obv, but if I can hold on to my job long enough, I anticipate paying both my credit card and my car loan off early next year.
+ The sun has started shining again. Hurrah!
+ Lolmom made the mistake of letting Oliver sleep in the bed with her the other night. Imagine something hyperactive and furry going "I'M A KITTEN! I'M A KITTEN! I'M A KITTEN!" whilst it plays with your glasses at 1:30 in the morning. This is why Oliver spends his nights in the bathroom (that, and we're NOT letting him have the run of the house until we're SURE he's toilet-trained).
+ On the minus side, the annual sport of southwestern Indiana, road construction, has also started up again, which led to a huge pile-up on IN-66 this morning that made me 15 minutes late to work. Seriously, not even Bloomington's infrastructure is that bad, and our city joke is the Men At Work sign.
+ Have a new RP character gnawing at my brainmeats, and nowhere to play him. I should probably advertise, but I'm not on a whole lot these days, in part because I work a normal schedule.

Also, beneath the cut, a to-do list. Feel free to ignore.

Things that probably need to get done this week )

1.) I'm behind, but a very happy (if belated) birthday to [livejournal.com profile] song_of_copper!

2.) I was actually productive today. Worked on cleaning my room like an adult, made dinner (kale pesto, and it is tasty), walked a mile, did laundry, prepared resumés. Am now desperately attempting to catch up on e-mail and so forth, and also to do a little writing before I crash, which is going to have to be in an hour and a half if I want to get up and go to work on time. Oh, and I cleaned out my car, but unfortunately the smell remains. (I went to pick up our vegetables from the CSA on Friday--pickups are usually on Saturday mornings, but due to the holiday they were doing it Friday evening, and I had the day off and the lolmom had to work--and lugged three buckets of foul organic slurry for their compost bin. I then promptly forgot about the buckets once I had emptied them and left them in the car for another 24 hours. On a hot July day. AWESOME JOB l33.)

3.) The casing over my driver's side rear taillight has been bashed out, and we're not sure how this happened. The lolmom noticed a bruise on one of the trees, as if someone had backed up and maybe hit me that way, but I know I did not hit the tree, and the car shows no other signs of having been hit. We also found branches down by the accident (crime?) scene, and it's storm season, so maybe one of the branches knocked it out. At least the bulb is still intact; it's just the casing that needs to be fixed. I guess I'll ask the dealership for an estimate when I go to get the oil changed and/or the battery replaced.

4.) Adulthood is overrated and may possibly fucking blow. On the other hand, I like it a whole hell of a lot better than I did childhood (I was not a happy child, to put it mildly).

5.) OMG YOU GUYS WE HAVE EGGPLANTS. I WILL NOT FAIL AT EGGPLANT THIS YEAR. And they actually look like eggplants are supposed to. I am excited.

Also, my direct deposit has hit my checking account, and it isn't insultingly low this time. And I want to beef up my savings and replace the spark plugs and pay a couple of bills and buy myself some shit, and I can only do a few of these things so it's probably going to be spark plugs and bills.

Man, adulthood fucking sucks.

The dishwasher installation guy came today! And he installed our dishwasher! And it's shiny and white and pretty and clean! And now we don't have to wallow in our own filth! Seriously, we just gazed upon it for ages with our shining, myopic eyes. Also, the element is black (the one in the old dishwasher was white with lime), and it has all these neato-keen features, and--

Holy God, I bought an appliance.

I'm, like, a real adult now, or something. Mostly "something", though.

[EDIT: Also, this has absolutely nothing to do with anything, but I'm re-reading Helliconia Summer by Brian W. Aldiss and feel vague disappointment because it's fun and a good read, but not as good as Helliconia Spring. Probably this is because I fell hard for Aoz Roon and haven't found anyone to measure up to him in the second book.]

I AM MAN, CONQUEROR OF NATURE. I make FIRE! Hunt MAMMOTH! Kill BIG GAME!

I have also just purchased a dishwasher and am the proud recipient of a small and limited credit line, which is more credit than I had when I walked into the store. The game plan, at this point, is to pay off the dishwasher, buy a laptop and a desktop and junk to go with them, pay all that off, and then cancel and cut up the card. At that point, it ought to have served its purpose. However, let's not get too ahead of ourselves here.

m0mmy picked out the dishwasher; it's a new white Whirlpool, and the people at Best Buy, in their eagerness to move product, knocked $50 off the price for her. They'll come and install it, and they'll also haul away the old one for us. (Now would be a good time to start bailing the stinky water out of the old one...) Wheeeeee!

The idea that I have purchased an appliance has apparently not sunk in yet, and probably won't until I get the first bill. It's not that I can't afford to make the payments--I could have written a check for the whole shebang and owned it free and clear--but the point here was to build credit, and the reminder that I've kind of succeeded is heartening.
xifeng: (we are all going to die)
The first major purchase I make this year, rather than the long-coveted laptop or the now-rapidly-becoming-necessary car, will be a dishwasher for m0mmy. This purchase is motivated largely by selfishness, as ours broke before Thanksgiving and we can't afford to fix it and so the dishes just pile up until one of us grows sick of living in our own filth. (All right, it's not really that bad, but doing cooking-and-eating dishes BY HAND is NOT FUN.) Also, it gives me an opportunity to build credit, which is rapidly becoming necessary.

Oh, and, like, we need one in case Mom decides to put the house on the market, because I totally would not want to buy a house without a dishwasher and I don't suppose anyone who would want to buy our house would either.

Perversely, I'm actually looking forward to picking out the dishwasher and having it installed, possibly because making major appliance purchases reinforces my status as Man Of The House and Bringer Of Appliances. This scares the dickens out of me, as there was a time, and not very far in the past either, when I would promptly have written it off as a pipe dream because dishwashers are BO-RING.

(Which, I mean, they are and I can think of several things I'd rather do for the cost of a dishwasher, but sometimes a man has to bite the bullet.)
