Happy birthday,
briarlaboheme!
Briar's username very aptly describes her, as she is called Briar and she is rather bohemian. She has pink hair, and is awesome. I wish I'd had half her balls at the same age, because I might have a few more adventures under my belt now (I'd have been hanging out in St. Petersburg, though, not NYC). In any case, today, it is her birthday.
Happy birthday,
briarlaboheme!
I'm very interested to see what you'll do in the next year.

Unexciting Nonadventures
May. 3rd, 2009 02:57 amMICE update: Initially, we heard a snap and checked the traps, which contained no mice. Subsequently, the lolmom checked and found a single front paw (either the mouse left something behind or gnawed off his foot). She feels tremendously guilty. I do not. Either way, we're reasonably sure the mice are probably not going to stick around--animals aren't stupid.
Speaking of animals not being stupid, Callice knows damn well that there is no cat shit on the living room floor. Or rather, she knows damn well that there should be no cat shit on the living room floor.
GARDEN update: We have lavender. If I learn to make soap or whatever, I know what some of you are going to get for every occasion for the rest of your lives. Mom and I got the regular-sized tomatoes and the eggplant potted a couple of days ago, and we've got the beans, zucchini, and cucumbers started. I went out and potted the peppers yesterday. The herbs and flowers and the spinach still need a new home, but we'll figure that out somehow. (Or I will, since Mom's away for the weekend.)
Went out to dinner with Mom and Connie. Got my hair figured out, finally. I think I can cross "do something about the hair" off my New Year's resolution list. Turns out the bangs just needed some evening-up. Hurrah!
Randomly, I really liked my outfit yesterday.
imperfectkatoru, I'm weeding out all the communities I'm not into anymore, and as it happens
male_colors never really took off. Would you be heartbroken if I bahleeted it, or do you want it up for old times' sake?
briarlaboheme, I've defriended your former LJ abode, just because my tiny brain gets confused too easily. Just FYI.
Also, a happy belated birthday to
uigenna. Dude, this is the problem with having a flist of any size; I keep forgetting. I'm not sure if people take it personally or not--depends on the person, I suspect--but I'm bothered by it.

I'm surprisingly happy about being away from the Int0rbuttz. I did, nonetheless, write some entries, which are backdated. There is nothing of interest there, but go to town. You can pretend they are plastic Easter eggs, brightly colored and chock full of delicious stupid.
First of all--did a quick and dirty catch-up. Congrats to
angeljuggalette on the new job (driving isn't that bad--you'll probably take to it better now that you're not a stupid teenager),
pixelation on the iPhone get, and
queen_lily_rose on the move, I love
duokinneas, and if there's any other important stuff I must know about now, please to be telling me and/or linking me so I can look at it and respond appropriately. Oh, and
anjala, I was going to ring you up and see if you survived the dentist, but it occurred to me that you might not be in any condition to talk, so I didn't. But I still hope you survived the dentist.
Also, it is mandatory that you visit
tiye and read her incisive commentary on early Egyptology in the Age Of Schliemann (in those days, children, all we had was smash-n-grab archaeology and we had to walk uphill both ways in the scorching desert in order to get to the antiquities whilst carrying heavy loads of rocks and our entire native crew on top of that, and by God we were GRATEFUL for it). The grumpy Ra at the end of her Belzoni post really makes the whole thing for me.
( Right, so get to the 101 things, Lee. Warning for anyone offended by boring, self-indulgent navel-gazing: Contains a lot of that. )
I have been doinking about with some family history stuff and have noticed that apparently I have quite distant relatives (in the sense that we descend from a common ancestor in the 17th or 18th century) who are LDS (Mormons, you lot), judging by the records they've thoughtfully put on WorldConnect. There is a somewhat baffling (to me, okay) tag attached to some of them, and I know at least a couple of y'all are LDS. Would any of y'all mind explaining to me what baptism for the dead is and why it is believed to be necessary? Is it actual doctrine or is it more of a cultural phenomenon?
(I'm not taking the piss here. I really would like to know.)
Also, because I meant to bring this up before I went away and then forgot:
pleasureblossom and
strawberryjulia, would either of you mind if I dropped your old journals from my flist (assuming they're not being used anymore)? Nothing personal, just keeps me from getting horrendously confused. There is no obligation to drop me back if you're feeling lazy. :D
You may see me around intermittently for the next week or so since a bunch of you were born around late July/early August, but for the most part I'm planning to return to my regularly scheduled Outer Darkness.

This One's For Public Consumption
Jun. 28th, 2008 10:56 pm+ Dinner was sweet and delicious. I'm kind of glad I didn't order a full portion of the ahi tuna sashimi and just have that as my meal, although from the weight-loss standpoint I probably should have. (I went over my limit by 400 calories. Yeek.) It was tasty, but it wasn't authentic; I think I vastly prefer honest-to-God Japanese-style sashimi.
+ This weight-loss stuff is hard.
+ This not-cussing stuff is hard. I already owe me $1.50.
+ Our kitchen smells like SWEET, DELICIOUS CARAMEL. This is going to be the best birthday cake EVER. (Until next year.)
+ Mom got me some coasters! Hurrah!
+ I now have "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora on MP3. This makes me unreasonably happy. If t3h n0v3l ever gets made into a movie, I want "Tarzan Boy" to figure in the soundtrack somehow. This is because I have bad taste. (It doesn't have to be, like, the main theme or anything; the soundtrack people could make a subtle reference to it or just use the chorus and I'd be happy. Actually, the lyrics don't really fit with the story, so sampling the chorus may work best.)
+ The neighbors are setting off fireworks. Callice does not like loud banging noises, probably due to her Angsty Past. (Callice was a year and a half old when she came home with me. She was a feral kitten who was turned in to the shelter; she had been living in a bus engine, and when the bus operator unwittingly started the bus, she was burnt over her back half. You can't tell where the burns were now, but the fact that she was living in a bus engine, combined with some of her other idiosyncrasies, makes me think that she lost her mother early.)
+ Callice would also like the sun turned off.
+
strawberryjulia, I was just kind of idly wondering if there is, to your knowledge, any Maori-language children's TV programming. I don't watch TV, but I might make an exception for that.
+ I was trying to grind some coffee earlier today and accidentally spilled some of my coffee beans on the floor. The only good thing about this is that our kitchen smelled like coffee for about five minutes, until I swept it up.
+ I seem to have given the lolmom a summer reading program. We were at the bookstore last night and she said something about wanting to read The Pillars of the Earth (Ken Follett), which I have, so I lent it to her, along with The $64 Tomato (William Alexander), which I thought she might like. I've stacked a bunch of other stuff I have that she might like.

( Old stuff )
New stuff:
It was actually
vnmpire's birthday on Mon., and I might have thoughtfully remembered the occasion if I hadn't been falling asleep at the computer. Ha, I'm such a great LJ friend. Or, y'know, not.
I just finished In Pharaoh's Army by Tobias Wolff, which is good, but which also made me a bit sad because our copy of the book had belonged to my father. (I haven't been able to locate his copy of This Boy's Life, and think he may have taken it with him, but I don't know. It's possible that it got moved to a different shelf and I just haven't caught up with it yet.) Wolff's work was, at one time, very significant to us and still carries those associations for me.
It's pushing the '80s and '90s here in the rolling hills of scenic southern Indiana. Soon, I can has A/C if I can manage to stick it out another 23 days until my birthday.
Have discovered that we still have the ice cream maker! HURRAH. (The lolmom made noises about putting it up in the last garage sale she had.) There will be many ice creams this summer. I shall perfect the frosty art of making them. Besides, it's as good a way as any to use up some of the remaining strawberries.
