Hopping on mostly to say,

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] samanosukesgirl!

Alas, there is no deeper post, as I am exhausted and bid fair to stay that way (worked until midnight on Friday, drove up to Gaston on Saturday, drove down to Indy, then to Terre Haute, then back to Evansville on Sunday, slept until noon today, worked a full shift until 11 tonight, and must be in Tell City for a job interview by 7 a.m. and at work by 10 a.m. and then I need to be sure to pick up produce sometime between 5 and 7 tomorrow night I think). Family reunion was good; I have some pictures (which I will share, so you can all look at family members who don't show up in my posts very often. Though I have got some real good shots of the lolmom for you).

Also, I expect to strike a decisive blow against my father shortly and thereby win not only our non-relationship but also everything ever. Well, the primary purpose is not to strike a decisive blow, but I suspect it may have that effect whether I want it to or not.

Now, if you will excuse me, I need to bother the lolmom at work and then make sure Tell City is on CST and not EST.

I have given some serious thought to changing my name to Sanjuro and becoming a wandering samurai. It can't possibly pay less than Lol-Mart. On the other hand, I'm not Japanese and would also rather quickly betray the fact that I don't know how to use my swords. It is always something. I guess I could be an Internet badass, but everybody's a tough guy on the Internets.

Good things:
+ I didn't work a full shift today. I also won't work a full shift tomorrow, but I will get out of work when it's still light out.
+ I'm off Monday.
+ The lolmom brought me a danish from the Donut Bank.
+ Delicious peach kefir, I has it.
+ I should have Sanjuro for Monday. When I'm off. YESSSSSS.
+ I am wearing rainbow-striped socks, which are awesome.
+ For Liberty and for Glory, fully 50% of my Amazon order, came today. (Apparently it takes them a little longer to get the assorted volumes of Samurai Deeper Kyo so I have to wait. Ain't no thing.)
+ 15 days until my weekend trip. :DDDDD
+ The lolmom is back to working nights! They've had her working split shifts for about the past month or so and this completely sucked ass.
+ Hyacinths and croci are up in the yard. :DDDDDD
+ I have plenty to read, omg.
+ Also, I have old-school hip-hop on repeat, which is proof that I am probably going to Hell but like I really care at this point. It has a good beat and is easy to "dance" to.

[EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] samanosukesgirl, and anybody else who's interested of course, you may wish to check out [livejournal.com profile] phony_boyfriend. Takeshi has appeared before, but I'm sure nobody would mind seeing him again.]

Dear Mr H~:

Hi there. It's your great-great-granddaughter, writing from TEH FUTURES. Specifically, about a hundred years or so, give or take, after your arrival in the New World. Given the lack of documentation, I'm starting to wonder if you did in fact arrive in the New World and if someone in the intervening generations didn't make the whole thing up. Also, it appears that your name was a very common one for strapping young Jewish lads in central and eastern Europe at about that time, so as you can imagine I'm having a lot of trouble leafing through Ellis Island records. Jewish GenWeb cheerfully assures me that it is possible to identify and locate you and my great-great-grandmother, despite the fact that you appear to have changed your surname (to H~) upon your arrival on our fair shores. I have severe reservations. When I ran my surname in their database (like a card file, but a lot faster), I got so many results that I just said a lot of bad words and decided to give up.

You might ask why I don't just go to the synagogue and ask to see the records. Well, I'm in the Midwest--I don't know just when you died, so I may be rehashing things you already know--where your grandson, my grandfather, stayed after he was discharged from the Army. There was a girl in it, you see. Also, the thing you feared has come to pass: we're not Jewish anymore. (Please don't scream too hard at my great-grandfather for this. He couldn't help who he loved.) Sometimes I still experience vestigial fury about this, not so much for our being goyim as for having lost our culture. I was brought up in my mother's Irish-German Catholic culture, which I'm glad for, but it would have been nice to have something from you guys too, besides some names that nobody could ever really quite remember and some towns that might be in Hungary/Poland/Croatia/the Crimean Ilkhanate/wherever. Nobody knows better than I that the past is often too painful to rehash, but it's my history too, and if I'm going to die of something that only strikes down Ashkenazim, I'd like to know if I have a fighting chance.

Anyway, I'm writing because I'm hoping you can appear to me in a dream or something and give me some reliable identifying details. I'm not LDS, so I don't believe your eternal salvation hangs upon my being able to identify you, but it's hard for me to see a puzzle and be unable to solve it.

Love,
l33 (your great-great-granddaughter, through your son Joseph)

PS: I know there was great anti-Semitism and pogroms and grinding poverty and repressive authorities and that, but the real reason you left Hungary(?) was because you had a fight with your father amirite?

Unrelated: Speeshul thx to [livejournal.com profile] augustuscaesar and [livejournal.com profile] samanosukesgirl for the card and the paid time, respectively. I ★ you both! (It's like ♥ but sparklier, also I like stars better than hearts.)

Good things:
+ I have new earrings. The 'Mart clearanced a whole bunch of them. I don't get a discount on anything that's been clearanced, but they're cheap enough that it doesn't matter.
+ Lol-Mart only wasted 4½ hours of my time tonight, and I have short shifts until my next day off.
+ I started to get back on the wagon with eating properly.
+ The Shell station is hiring; it's nothing fancy or anything I really want, but it would be full-time, which I need, and it would be overnights, which I can deal with.
+ I have batteries for my CD player.
+ I find it really entertaining that, because I have Latin (the language) listed as an interest on my profile, the ads are all like, "MEET LATIN BEAUTIES FIND THE LATIN WOMAN OF YOUR DREAMS!!!!." Lololol.
+ Hey, [livejournal.com profile] jurhael, I don't know if you remember this Sue-we stumbled upon her a few years back during your HoND period-but she finally got sporked, if you haven't seen it yet.

And now, a MEME )

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT SO YOU NEED TO READ IT. My domain registration and hosting have expired. The domain is an expensive toy, and unfortunately I do not have the wherewithal to maintain it for the time being. Consequently, XFN will no longer be accessible, and I will no longer be reachable at the XFN e-mail address. My other e-mail address, likely to be my permanent one, is theninthbeauty@gmail.com. (You can also use gyaszdal@graffiti.net, but it's harder to spell.) Plz update your records.

If you know my Yahoo! e-mail, be aware that it is now rarely checked and you should only e-mail me there if you're okay with my possibly taking months to look at your message. I have an "official" Yahoo! e-mail address which I use for job-hunt stuff, but as it contains my full real name in the address, I'm not giving it out here.

Also, here is a brief rundown of the past week or so:
Unexciting nonadventures )

Also: I went to Bloomington today. Consequently, have had some very important things reaffirmed for me, so I'm sharing them here, openly.

1.) Fuck this Lol-Mart shit. I need to find a better place to work. Based on what it cost me to go to the doctor when I was sick a couple of weeks ago, have come to the conclusion that health insurance is not negotiable.
2.) Fuck this living in the Tri-State shit. I need to go back home, where I don't have to pay attention to the societal attitudes &c. that bother me, where I am happier even when things aren't going so well, and where there's stuff to do. (A lot of the stuff that entertains me is even free or low-cost, so being poor in Bloomington isn't the Death By Boredom that it is in Evansville.) But I cannot stay here. It is killing me, and I want to live. Right now, I'd even settle for moving north and east to be CLOSER to Bloomington.

Once more into the breach, I suppose.

I worked in Lawn & Garden today, manning a cash register, which is likely what I would be doing if I transferred back there permanently. At least I get to be in close proximity to the greenhouse and see the sun and feel the breeze, though. More perversely, it has bred in me a desire to farm. Seriously, the Burpee catalogue has turned into Produce Pr0n in something like the past 18 hours. If I had a few acres, I would totally be growing a riotous orgy of produce. (And probably some flowers, but the garden that we had when I was growing up in Maryland is, for me, the standard by which all gardens are to be judged, and while the climate here isn't dissimilar, our yard here is shadier and some of the flowers wouldn't tolerate it very well. Inevitably, these are the flowers I'd most want. You know, stuff like roses and poppies. At least we have irises up in the backyard now!)

The lolmom has been talking about growing an herb garden on the windowsill for some time, and she has a book called Farming in a Flowerpot which she bought around the time she and my father were married (apparently in hopes of stretching a fewbucks on the grocery bill). Naturally, these two things were immediately taken to their logical conclusion and now we're all excited about growing honest-to-God FOODS in a very small space. (OMG YOU GUYS DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN GET SMALL CITRUS TREES? THAT PRODUCE EDIBLE FRUIT?? AND DWARF NECTARINE TREES???) Mom was, surprisingly, tolerant of my whining and crying for a lemon tree, but put her foot down on the nectarine-tree request. I may have to get one anyway, sneak it in, and lovingly tend it without telling her, if this proves a cost-effective solution. Also, I have not resigned myself to not!getting an orange tree, even though I recognize that my image of orange trees is shaped by seeing some sort of Grand Marnier or orange juice ad or something when I was a kid: glossy green foliage and gigantic orange globes.

I really miss having an apple tree; we had one in Maryland, which was great from the free-produce standpoint and less so from the lawn-cleanliness standpoint (our compost heap constantly smelled like cider because we'd chuck apples that had gone rotten into it, and we had to pick up fallen apples that we couldn't get to before my folks mowed the lawn).

At least we've learnt from mistakes made early in my parents' marriage (and a few I was around to witness and remember) and aren't planting corn, watermelon, or mint.

In less squeeful news, we have an unwelcome house guest, of the rodent variety. Mom found that someone had chewed through the raisin lid and quickly used her powers of observation and deduction to conclude that we had a mouse, as there were droppings everywhere and the damn thing got into everything. Why are movie-and-children's-lit mice cute and real mice are just a pain in the ass? More to the point, why is this dumbass mouse unaware that a cat lives here? Usually they're pretty quick to figure that out. Is it some sort of robo-mouse from the future? Also, why is Callice defective in re: fulfilling her evolutionary destiny, viz., hunting/killing/eating mice? Seriously, she's current on her shots, so it's not like the mouse can do a whole lot to her. Unless it actually is a robo-mouse from the future. I know from my highly scientific experiments that she actually is afraid of those.

Not much to report, otherwise. I never thought I'd really get all that into gardening, though I suppose producing vegetables follows naturally on my interest in cooking. (Side addendum: [livejournal.com profile] samanosukesgirl thinks I should not bahleet [livejournal.com profile] deliciouspastry when I'm done migrating fic, but that it should enjoy a second act as a food journal or something. Y/N?)
