I seem to be writing some Trojan War fanfic (again) because I am totally not reading the Iliad again at all why do you ask, and so I have this idea and I know where the story is ultimately going to wind up. Except the thing is that it does have to do with geography (which is why I usually have three maps of Bronze Age Greece and environs pulled up when I'm working on it), so I'm already at Argos, and you guys I haven't written Diomedes that much. (Actually, I think I've only written him once, and that was in "Reveille".) And I have to think about what he's like. I mean, I know the stories and all that, and I'm trying to gently but firmly put Phillip Parotti's brilliant "Diomedes at Aulis" (the first story from his equally brilliant The Greek Generals Talk) at the back of my mind so it can't get to me, and ARRRRRGH. This is really hard because the story is set at the very beginning of the war (actually, even before there really is a war) so I can't bounce him off anybody else from the story just yet. Except maybe his first wife, though I haven't given her a lot of thought and I don't know what she's like.

I mean, for crap's sake, I can write Achilles and Odysseus and Clytemnestra with my eyes shut. (Actually, I have to think about Clytemnestra because my version of Clytemnestra is a very manipulative person and my own idea of Cunning Machinations really puts the B into "subtle", but I can usually figure her out.) And it's not that I don't like Diomedes (shit, I like all the Greeks, except Palamedes. Oh, and the Lesser Ajax kind of had it coming); it's just that my characterization of him hasn't had to stand on its own yet. In "Reveille", I bounced him off Odysseus and that worked, but I can't do that here because he hasn't even met Odysseus yet, or anybody really.

And then on top of all that, the Hurt/Comfort Bunny bit me and now there's some goddamn fic set at Aulis parked on my hard drive.

I should just give it up and write Achilles/Patroclus for the rest of my "career". ARE YOU HAPPY [livejournal.com profile] jurhael~

TL;DR: I suck at writing, also expect some shitty Trojan War fic in the near future. This is guaranteed to delight only [livejournal.com profile] arisha, and possibly also Jo and [livejournal.com profile] duokinneas.

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] jurhael!

Good things:
+ I have new earrings. The 'Mart clearanced a whole bunch of them. I don't get a discount on anything that's been clearanced, but they're cheap enough that it doesn't matter.
+ Lol-Mart only wasted 4½ hours of my time tonight, and I have short shifts until my next day off.
+ I started to get back on the wagon with eating properly.
+ The Shell station is hiring; it's nothing fancy or anything I really want, but it would be full-time, which I need, and it would be overnights, which I can deal with.
+ I have batteries for my CD player.
+ I find it really entertaining that, because I have Latin (the language) listed as an interest on my profile, the ads are all like, "MEET LATIN BEAUTIES FIND THE LATIN WOMAN OF YOUR DREAMS!!!!." Lololol.
+ Hey, [livejournal.com profile] jurhael, I don't know if you remember this Sue-we stumbled upon her a few years back during your HoND period-but she finally got sporked, if you haven't seen it yet.

And now, a MEME )

1.) I think LJ is on the fritz again, because it says my last update was 7 days ago. Actually, it was 11. Or thereabouts.

2.) My appearances will likely be sporadic for some time to come because I have a lot of things to do in preparation for the upcoming move, which God willing will be at the beginning of March or so. However, there will be posts in which I attempt to fob off crap that I don't want or can't take with me onto other people.

3.) H is back from Kobe. HURRAH. He has still not succeeded in his attempt to quit smoking, but the year is young and he has managed to cut back, so also HURRAH. All the same, I expect I'll have to pick up an ashtray when he's here in the fall.
OH HOLY CRAP H IS GOING TO BE HERE.
3a.) I wish I were still smoking, because it was a lot easier to keep my weight under control back then. Of course, it could have had to do with the fact that I was in college and walking all over campus (even when I had a car and an apartment), and it could also have had to do with the fact that I pretty much lived on coffee. On the other hand, at least my weight is remaining stable, but that doesn't mean I want to be this number for the rest of my life.

4.) Most of my entertainment for the past couple of weeks has revolved around movies; we went to see Atonement on Saturday (I liked it, and it played with perception in some interesting ways, but it was rather a downer). Also, [livejournal.com profile] jurhael, if you haven't seen Notes on a Scandal yet, you should really try to get ahold of it; one of the themes has to do with a kind of narcissism.

5.) Also I finished The Warlord by Malcolm Bosse (a relic of my father's). I was pleasantly surprised, as I had expected it to be stupendous crap, but it was actually quite good.

6.) Went up to Bloomington last week to look at an apartment. I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to get a 1-bedroom, because it's easier for me to think in terms of what I can afford/what I'm likely to get rather than in terms of what I want. (I suppose someday I will be able to afford a 2-bedroom. Alas.) In terms of location and what the landlord pays, it's perfectly okay; in terms of space, I could make it work, but it would be a stretch, and I'd have to leave my upstairs table at home. I might apply for it anyway, after I've looked at some other places, though I need to clarify their pet policy first (leasing agent said the cat would be okay; application says no pets).

(I already looked at apartments where I used to live. There's a lovely 2-bedroom available, but I have severe misgivings about throwing money down on it when I don't know that I can afford it. Unlike the last time I did this, I have a car and credit cards now.)

Was indescribably sad to leave.
6a.) Maybe because I've already told H about all this, and because to me it's old news, I just feel kind of brusque and short about rehashing it here. But I figure at least 2.5 of you might like to know how it's all turning out.

7.) Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] imperfectkatoru! Also a happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] queen_lily_rose.

[livejournal.com profile] jurhael! Amazon informs me that two of the four things I bought you for your birthday have shipped and that you should be receiving them between 3/10 and 5/10. They won't even be a whole month late! :D

I have only six minutes, or thereabouts, before it is midnight in Florida, so:

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] jurhael!

Hopefully cake was had. :D

Things that have happened lately, which may or may not be of general interest:

+ Mom's heating coil in her car is shot, so she has a loaner, which spares me the necessity of carting her around (thank God). It will, alas, cost $1500 or thereabouts to fix, and the parts probably won't be in until later this week because that's just how those stories go.

+ Mystery of the Missing Paychecks was solved last week. I was going to cash a couple of paychecks (I get paid every week, and last month I was still getting checks for work I'd billed for in July, since we'd agreed that I'd start on 1 August to make it easier to bill). I was going to go to the bank after I got off the phone with Joy, and couldn't find my paychecks (I distinctly remembered they were in my car), and tore the downstairs apart looking for them. Long story short, I had stuffed them in a library book which I then returned (presumably I put them in there so I wouldn't forget about them). The librarians were nice enough to ring me up and let me know.

+ Had dinner with Joy Fri. night. Mmm, red meat and chocolate pie.

I CAN HAS MAORI NAO???? )

Hi. I'm not dead. I am, however, very busy trying to get my Real Life (tm) in some kind of order, but the process thereof is not something that anybody wants to hear about, so I haven't been up to blogging lately, except for private posts that contain my to-do list of doom and woe. On the other hand, at least I am actually accomplishing parts of my to-do list of doom and woe.

H still hasn't written. I am starting to worry but cannot justify calling him to myself.

[livejournal.com profile] forgottensanity and [livejournal.com profile] jurhael, I've set up folders for you guys on XFN; just log into the WebFTP utility, and there they are. They are named "fbi" and "jowystuff" respectively. Got questions? Feel free to e-mail.

Also, if anyone has whiny shit they want legitimized, please feel free to hit up someone else. My purpose in life is not to coddle you and coo over you with tender words of "nice", but I will be happy to enable you to suck it up and do something about whatever is wrong with your life instead of just crying and whining and grousing all the goddamn time. Thanks so much!

Bloomington tomorrow. WIN.

Quick note for anyone who gives a shit, which almost certainly is limited to [livejournal.com profile] forgottensanity and [livejournal.com profile] jurhael--the domain will return in the next couple of weeks or so (HOREY). However, some changes will be made. Below, a précis:

1.) I've had it up to here with PowWeb, which as you knew was coming for some time. We're switching to DreamHost. This means that pretty much all the files that were up on XFO before are now going to be lost, so I hope everyone has backups. This is not a big deal for me, since TI had been taken down and I've got layouts and text for my other projects saved here and there, but it may be to you. Also, I'll have to reconstitute everyone's e-mail and FTP passwords and so on and so forth. Cat, DreamHost may have WebFTP; I'm not sure, I'll need to dick with it.
1a.) Also, we're prepaid for two years, so we won't need to worry about this again until 2009. WIN. I'm not paying significantly more than what I was paying at PowWeb, on the off chance either of you cared.

2.) The domain name will change. I still own XFO but am planning to quietly drop that name after the registration expires next year. The new domain will be xi-feng.net because I am ever so very creative.

That's all. l33 out.

1.) Dear INDOT: Somebody shat all over Indiana 56 eastbound between Livonia and Salem. Please clean it up. D: Thank you for your attention to this matter. Love, Lee.

2.) Tee hee, I have a copy of The Children of Húrin, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that [livejournal.com profile] jurhael doesn't. I am sure I will subsequently find out that I am wrong, for such is the way of the world.

3.) [livejournal.com profile] momo! You have the speshful qualifications needed to help me with a speshful project! Comment if you are interested in being annoying and persistent and spamming my journal. Also, enjoy some delicious Kentucky Fried Spleen, compliments of The Profane Tales. :D

4.) I think I will be back into the RPing in organized games thing shortly. BWAHAHAHA.

5.) A very happy birfday 2 [livejournal.com profile] calanthe_, who is proof that sometimes you should say Yes to crack. Let us celebrate with cake, and pr0n. ♥
